Want to THRIVE in the New AI Era? Become This Kind of Copywriter …

It wasn’t that long ago that writers were speculating AI was going to take over the industry and put writers out of business.
Here we are, closing in on three years later, and if you’re still wondering, “Will AI replace me?,” I think you might be asking the wrong question.
These days, the question to ask is …
“How can I use AI to become a more valuable, in-demand writer?”
Because the way I see it, AI is no longer an “optional tool.”
Statista reports the AI market as a whole is expected to grow to $826 billion by 2030. That’s more than quadruple what it was last year ($184 billion).
And it’s because companies of all sizes are adopting it … using it in their day-to-day workflows.
Nearly 90% of business leaders now report AI being fundamental to their company’s strategy.
Not only that, but …
New AI developments are coming out what seems like every week now.
For example …
- OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) just released its first iteration of an “AI agent” that can autonomously handle web-based tasks like making restaurant reservations, planning vacations, booking flights, and more.
- Over at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University, they’re using AI to teach robots to perform surgeries by watching videos …
- Scientists are leveraging AI to accelerate the discovery of new materials by analyzing the properties of elements in the periodic table and simulating countless combinations in record time.
Honestly, it’s kind of hard to keep up with it all.
But I think a January 2025 Business Insider article sums up my advice to you today:
“If you want to land a job this year, get good with AI.”
It’s true …
In my experience, at least, clients want to hire writers who know how to integrate AI with what they do.
Not because they think AI can write better …
But because they understand AI can help you come up with better ideas …
They understand AI can help you create better copy faster (critical in this day and age).
And at the end of the day …
They understand that copywriters who know how to leverage AI are delivering more value than those who aren’t.
This is why I think the future belongs to copywriters who master AI — i.e., “AI copywriters.”
And, it’s why the best thing you can do is start now learning how to use it to your advantage.
- Learn how to use AI as a brainstorming partner, so you never have to face the “blank page blues” again …
- Understand how to use AI for deep research, so you can speed up the process dramatically and infuse your copy with ironclad proof …
- Know how to use AI as a copy chief who can help make your copy punchier, more engaging, and easier for your audience to read …
- Get familiar with how to use AI to help your clients at every stage of a marketing funnel — like their ads, their landing pages, their emails, and more …
Doing this will make you a true “AI copywriter” who brings a ton of value to any marketing team.
It’s my belief that the days of being a “copy purist” — a writer who focuses solely on copy while rejecting AI and avoiding the broader skills of marketing, strategy, and optimization — are over.
Why?
Because businesses today aren’t hiring writers just to fill a page with well-crafted sentences.
They have AI for that.
They’re looking for professionals who understand how to move the needle — whether that’s driving conversions, increasing engagement, or optimizing content for other key metrics.
ALL THAT requires a human. (Frankly, after using AI daily for nearly three years, I can confirm AI is still a long way off from being able to do the stuff I just mentioned.)
In short …
Clients want a problem solver.
For you, this means becoming an “AI copywriter” who can craft better ads, landing pages, emails, and more … and who can pinpoint the problems when things aren’t converting.
AI helps you with all of that.
And the cool thing is, AI has truly leveled the playing field for you.
It’s no longer you versus “A-list” copywriters or anyone else.
Practically anyone willing to adapt can thrive in this new era.
You just need to stay open, stay curious, and start using AI as a tool to enhance your skills as a copywriter.
And I hope you do …
The demand for skilled, strategic copywriters is not going away — if anything, it’s growing.
Businesses will always need humans to understand their audience, craft compelling messages, and make key “data-driven” decisions that AI simply can’t.
Yes, AI can handle some of the heavy lifting … but it can’t think critically, persuade with emotion, or innovate like a human can.
That’s up to you.
And companies are willing to pay very well for that.
