Looking for Predictable Writing Income?
This Overlooked Writing Gig Is in HUGE Demand… and Can Generate “Month After Month” Income That Never Stops:
- $300
- $800
- $2,000
- $3,000
- $4,000
- More?!?
Once You Can Write This Simple Project That Millions of Businesses Need…
The Choice Is Yours!
Writers who specialize in this overlooked project call it the “sweet spot” in our industry…
And for good reason…
This is a writing gig where you get to enjoy all the freedoms and all the perks of the writer’s life…
Without sacrificing that steady stream of reliable monthly income writers love.
It’s truly the best of both worlds.
And it’s a lot easier to have than you might think.
Today I’m going to introduce you to this “sweet spot”…
Where you can enjoy high pay… flexible hours… time to play… comfort… and security…
Everything a writer could ask for.
And the money?
Well, that’s what’s so amazing about it…
It can be practically anything you want it to be!
Once you have this skill under your belt, you can take on one client and make anywhere from $300 to $800 to $2,000 writing just one morning a week…
You can make it your specialty and earn $1,000, $4,000, $6,000, or even $8,000 writing as few as four or five mornings a week… and still have plenty of time for yourself.
Or, if you love the writing, you can really dial it up — and go full-time specialist!
And because this is a writing gig where new copy is needed month after month…
It’s common for companies to pay you a healthy monthly retainer — just to keep you as their writer!
I’ll explain more about how the money works a little later.
But the bottom line is this:
If you’re like so many writers I talk to here at AWAI…
Writers who love the freedom being a freelance writer can give them — but are reluctant to surrender the security of a steady job…
Then you’re definitely going to want to know all about this writing specialty.
I’ll explain it all ahead…
But I should first mention that there are other benefits beyond the money and security…
- This is a writing project EVERY business should have as part of their digital marketing strategy — no matter their size, location, or industry… so there are always more clients out there (and we’ll show you how to land them!).
- The writing here is easy to learn, fun to write, and involves SHORT copy — making it the PERFECT starting point for a new writer.
- This is not “sales copy” but rather content used to connect with your client’s customers on a regular basis — giving them useful information they’ll want to read and appreciate.
- You’ll never “labor” over a project for weeks or even days. Once you have the technique and the formula in hand, most writing projects can be finished in a few hours.
- You get to work with fiercely loyal clients who value their relationship with you, which means the client(s) you land today are likely to be clients you have years and years down the road.
Oh, and did I mention?
These projects are super-fun to write…
Not only because the content is “short and snappy,” but also because there is so much you can write about — which means you’ll never be at a loss for topics to tackle.
Plus, as you’ll see in a moment, this writing specialty allows you to use far more “creativity” than you get to use on other copywriting projects.
So what is it that has me SO excited for you and every writer who wants to do fun, simple writing that leaves you with plenty of time to enjoy your writer’s life…
Without sacrificing a steady monthly income?
The answer might surprise you…
It’s E-newsletters!
That’s right!
I’m talking about those e-newsletters — or email newsletters — businesses use to engage with their customers and prospects, keep them informed, and stay top of mind.
And if there’s any doubt about whether e-newsletters are popular enough for there to be plenty of work for copywriters…
Check your email inbox!
If you’re like me, you get e-newsletters from companies you’re connected to…
And again, if you’re like me (and they’re well written)…
You love to read them!
Because a well-written e-newsletter has information I’m interested in. And the company knows I’m interested, because it’s information I’ve asked to get!
That’s why e-newsletters are SO valuable to a business’s bottom line…
It’s that engagement that really builds customer loyalty.
And as any business will tell you — a loyal customer is like gold!
Why?
Because loyal customers keep buying. And unlike new customers — it doesn’t cost anything to acquire them!
I’ll explain more about the power of e-newsletters in a minute…
And I’ll give you five secrets for writing an entire e-newsletter.
But first, let me show you a couple of examples of the type of e-newsletters you could get paid to write.
Here’s one from The Bruery, a microbrewery in Southern California, where they suggest beer pairings for each course of a meal:
Pretty cool if you’re a beer lover, right?!
I know some beer enthusiasts who love cooking a fancy meal at home and trying to pair the perfect brew with each course.
If you’re part of that audience, you’d enjoy getting these expert tips delivered to your inbox.
Now, that’s great for the reader…
But what makes this newsletter so valuable for the brewery — especially since there’s no direct selling going on?
For one thing, it keeps them top of mind. So they’re more likely to be the destination the next time one of their readers goes out for drinks.
And here’s the more immediate value…
If you were a subscriber who read this newsletter and decided to try this idea, what would you do?
You’d buy the beers they suggest…
THEIR beers!
Now, I don’t want you to think e-newsletters are fun only when your client is a “cool” business like a microbrewery. So let me show you another example…
Check out this e-newsletter from a B2B company that offers transcription services
You might expect a business-to-business (B2B) company like Rev, which transcribes audio files like interviews, webinars, and Zoom calls into text, to have a boring, “professional” e-newsletter…
But look how much fun this is!
- The copy is casual, conversational, and timely (since this came out around Halloween)…
- They add value AND show how valuable their services are…
- They keep readers engaged with a poll to respond to…
- They share news about their business…
- They encourage you to download their new free app…
- And there are links to their blog (which is where they can sell more).
But there’s not a single line of sales copy in the whole newsletter!
Now, when Rev delivers this to their subscribers’ inboxes every month, they stay top of mind and keep those subscribers engaged…
Making themselves the natural choice when a reader needs transcription services — even if they’ve never used Rev before.
But what makes e-newsletters so effective? Why have so many companies jumped back on the bandwagon and incorporated e-newsletters into their digital marketing strategy?
One big reason is a very important effect they have on how readers perceive their business…
The “Humanizing” Effect
An e-newsletter “humanizes” a business…
And gives a face to what often feels like a faceless entity.
Some companies even have their newsletter come from one person, in that person’s voice…
(Not that they’re actually writing it — that’ll be YOUR job!)
Providing the face of a real person helps readers feel like they know the business on a personal level…
Which makes them more likely to buy.
Let’s say you sign up for your bank’s e-newsletter.
Who is it easier to connect with: A faceless corporation? Or Jane from Accounting?
How about a boutique clothing store in town…
Who would you rather hear from in your inbox every few weeks: The store itself? Or Audrey, who helps you pick out a few great outfits?
This humanizing effect is why 31% of B2B marketers said e-newsletters are the BEST way to develop relationships with potential customers, according to the Content Marketing Institute. (That’s more than DOUBLE blog posts, which came in second place at 13%.)
It’s why e-newsletters help turn leads into buyers… buyers into repeat customers… and repeat customers into loyal fans and brand advocates.
But there’s something else that’s important to understand about e-newsletters…
Part of the reason they’re so effective is that readers are more receptive to them than they are to most marketing content.
And it’s why readers actually look forward to getting their e-newsletters delivered…
“Invited Guests”
You get an e-newsletter only by subscribing…
Meaning YOU make the choice to have this email delivered to your inbox — your personal space — on a regular basis.
This is powerful…
Because it means the e-newsletters you subscribe to are “invited guests.”
You don’t stumble upon them while scrolling, or by searching Google…
And since you decided to get these e-newsletters, you’re more likely to open, read, and respond to them than you are other content.
That’s why e-newsletters across all industries have an average open rate — meaning the reader clicked on the email to read it — of over 21%.
When it comes to email marketing — that’s like hitting a home run!
And nearly 40 times higher than the engagement rates on Facebook, which average 1.37% or lower for business pages.
This shouldn’t be a surprise…
After all, you don’t control what you see on your social media newsfeeds. And neither do the companies you follow, that want to reach you.
Everything is dictated by some mysterious algorithm…
But when you subscribe to an e-newsletter, it shows up exactly where and when you expect it.
Businesses don’t have to worry about whether it will get to you… and they don’t have to pay to “boost” their newsletter in your inbox.
This is great news for any business that sends an e-newsletter…
But it’s especially valuable for small businesses…
Because in your email inbox, the size, popularity, or “reach” of a company makes no difference.
An email from Target won’t get preferential treatment over an email from your local chiropractor.
And speaking of “local,” this is a crucial point, because local businesses can be some of your best clients.
But before we talk about clients, I want to walk you through the simple process for writing an e-newsletter…
A process you can usually complete in one dedicated morning — giving you the rest of your day for other writing assignments… or to use however you like!
This way you’ll know in the next few minutes if e-newsletter writing is the perfect opportunity to start with…
Or, if you’re already writing — whether it’s a way to boost your income substantially with little added writing time.
5 Secrets to Writing an Engaging E-newsletter People Look Forward to Reading!
Ready to see how easy it is to write a great company e-newsletter?
I’m going to show you right now — using The Weight List from the Bulletproof food and lifestyle brand as a guide:
Secret 1:
Capture Attention Instantly
People are busy.
You’ve got to grab their attention right away or they’re gone.
So your “lead” has to reel them in.
But this doesn’t have to be a lead that lasts for a page, or two, or longer, like you’d find in a sales letter.
In an e-newsletter, your lead can be a sentence or two — like it is here:
This lead is just an image, a headline, two short sentences, and a “Read More” button.
Clear, concise, and relevant for an audience that aspires to get and stay healthy.
Could you write something like this?
Of course you could!
But that’s just the first secret to creating a compelling e-newsletter…
Secret 2:
Get the Right “Mix”
Every e-newsletter looks different. There’s no one successful formula.
Some have one long feature article and a few short ones…
And others — like Bulletproof’s — don’t include any full-length articles. Instead, this is a digest-style newsletter, with short teasers and links for each piece of content.
But notice all the different types of content here:
- Two blog posts
- A podcast episode
- A recipe
- A video
- A tip
Whether you’d rather engage with content by sitting down and reading a blog post… by watching a video… or by listening to a podcast while you’re out walking, cooking, or brushing your teeth, there’s something here for everyone.
And when you’re the copywriter, the amount of writing this would require is very small, because you’re just writing the teasers.
(BUT — here’s a bonus secret… you get paid for writing the newsletter itself. But you could also write the full blog posts that are linked to it — for a separate fee!)
Secret 3:
Make It POP!
You won’t be responsible for designing the e-newsletters you write…
But you can have a big impact by making suggestions about the design and images to include.
This Bulletproof newsletter has a relevant, vibrant image to go with each piece of content, including this picture of one of their products in use:
And this screenshot of their founder and well-known influencer, Dave Asprey, from the video he shot:
But it’s not just images and design that make the newsletter pop. You can suggest and write content that’s more visually appealing…
Think sidebars… quotes… bullets… statistics… charts… There’s really no limit to what you can include.
Anything that’s relevant, valuable, and attention-grabbing is worthwhile — so let your imagination run wild!
Secret 4:
Include an Exclusive Offer to Make the Reader Feel Special
The main point of an e-newsletter is to connect… to build a relationship with the reader… and to stay top of mind.
That doesn’t mean it can’t sell. In fact, including an offer is often a good idea.
Think about it…
If you subscribe to a company’s e-newsletter, you’re part of a special group. You’re getting inside info other people don’t get.
And you’d probably like it — even feel special — if you got an exclusive offer just for being part of that group.
So by all means — include a sale no one else will see.
The important thing to remember is that any offer in an e-newsletter should feel like a bonus — NOT the focal point.
See how Bulletproof sells in their e-newsletter:
This small section comes right after the first article. But notice, it consists of just a headline and four products with their image and price.
That’s it…
No sales copy…
Nothing for you as the copywriter to write…
And they get right back to the content after this.
They also do one other seamless bit of selling toward the end of the newsletter:
The final piece of content is a valuable tip. And it fits the theme of this issue — making healthy choices while traveling.
It just so happens that one of their products is the solution you can use to follow this tip. So they make it easy to shop for that item.
It’s really not even sales copy. It’s just good, solid content.
And that leads to the final secret for writing a great e-newsletter…
Secret 5:
Don’t Let Your Effort Go to Waste!
No one will ever see the e-newsletter you write if they don’t open it…
So you have to craft a compelling subject line that stands out in readers’ cluttered inboxes and practically forces them to open it!
Don’t rely on the fact that they signed up for this newsletter and want to get it.
You can’t take their attention for granted, because there’s still so much competing for their attention — not just in their inbox, but in their text messages, on Netflix, and in their personal life.
Anything and everything they can do with their time — even sleeping — is competing for their attention with the e-newsletter you write. So make sure you write a subject line that compels them to open and read the email NOW!
And that’s really it…
These five secrets will help you write engaging e-newsletters that are short, fun, fast paced, non-salesy — but still a key component of your client’s marketing.
So if you think you’d like to write e-newsletters, you might be wondering…
What kinds of businesses use them? And where can I find clients?
Well, I have good news for you…
Clients Are Everywhere!
There’s no limit to the type of business you could work with…
Whether it’s a big corporation like Walmart… a midsized company like AWAI… or even a solo professional like a dentist…
It pays to have an e-newsletter.
In fact, 83% of businesses already use e-newsletters to communicate with customers and leads, according to marketing blog Omnisend.
With so many companies already sending e-newsletters, you won’t be able to walk three steps without bumping into a potential client!
It doesn’t even matter what niche you want to write in.
Software… beer or wine… investing… real estate… self-defense… pet grooming… living overseas… antique furniture restoration…
The options are endless.
And like I mentioned earlier, you won’t have to go far to find some of your BEST options…
All the Clients You Need Right Outside Your Front Door!
Think about all the local businesses… the solo professionals… the service providers in your hometown…
Doctors…
Lawyers…
Accountants…
Gyms, spas, and fitness clubs…
Cafés, delis, and coffee shops…
Salons and barbershops…
Little League and youth sports organizations…
And that’s just scratching the surface!
These businesses could all benefit from publishing an e-newsletter.
Think about it…
Their e-newsletter would keep people informed about what’s happening in their business…
It would demonstrate their expertise and show how likeable they are…
And it could even offer discounts or special deals.
Take an orthodontist, for instance…
If his practice sent a monthly e-newsletter, each issue could profile satisfied customers who have had their teeth straightened, and show their before-and-after pictures.
It might also have an article on caring for your braces or retainer.
And there could be a monthly deal for a free consultation.
If you’re a parent whose child needs braces, who would you choose…
An orthodontist with a standard website but who you have no personal “feel” for?
Or the orthodontist who shows you his track record of success AND whose e-newsletter also helps him come across as friendly, helpful, and approachable?
Of course you’d go with the one whose e-newsletter gives you confidence he’ll do a great job and be pleasant to deal with.
And ANY local business could benefit in the same way.
Working with small, local businesses is a great solution if you’ve ever worried about landing clients or felt like you didn’t know enough to write for a big company with a fully staffed marketing department.
It’s low stress and low stakes, and every client you land could lead to a long-term relationship.
And since you’ll have the chance to get to know your clients more personally — or maybe you’ll land clients you already know — this will be some of the most fulfilling work you do as a copywriter!
And if you like working with these clients, you can push your boundaries past your own neighborhood…
Become THE E-newsletter Copywriter in Your Niche
A potentially lucrative path is to specialize in e-newsletters in one niche.
Let’s say you want to be THE e-newsletter writer for chiropractors…
There might not be enough chiropractors to build a whole freelance writing business just with clients near you…
But there are nearly 70,000 chiropractors in the United States.
You COULD build your business just by working with half a dozen of them.
Right there, you’d have six separate monthly fees you could rely on. Those will add up quickly!
Or let’s say you want to specialize in writing e-newsletters for accountants…
There are more than 1.5 million accountants in the United States, and more than 88,000 accounting firms.
You could work with a tiny, TINY fraction of them and pull a great income!
So you can specialize in one industry and really come to understand your clients’ audience and pain points.
And these are still “local” clients, even if they’re not local to you.
What Could Your Life as an E-newsletter Specialist Look Like?
(Hint: It’s Pretty Sweet!)
Now, if writing e-newsletters for businesses is starting to sound exciting, let me show you something…
Not only are e-newsletters powerful and in-demand tools for businesses, but…
The life of an e-newsletter specialist is pretty sweet!
Imagine this…
You wake up Monday morning ready to tackle a new workweek.
You make a pot of coffee… open your laptop… spend an hour or two doing some basic research for the short newsletter articles you’re going to write… spend another two or three hours writing them… and you’re done!
That e-newsletter you just created is ready to go to your client for review. It might come back to you for a simple set of revisions. But for all intents and purposes, you just banged out an entire e-newsletter in half a day.
And the money?
Well, this is where it gets really exciting!
According to the AWAI State of the Industry Report and Copywriting Pricing Guide — the average fee a professional copywriter can charge for a company e-newsletter is between $800 and $2,000, depending on the scope and size of the project.
But let’s just take the lowest end of the scale for now.
The typical $800 newsletter might contain three, four, maybe five short articles, consisting of anywhere from 250 to 500 words…
That’s somewhere between three and eight pages of writing using a typical Word document… something a writer with some experience can easily handle, given how short, simple, and direct e-newsletter articles are.
So, for just that one newsletter that you wrote for a client in a single morning… you can now send a bill for $800.
But remember, in most cases, clients aren't “one and done” when it comes to newsletters.
Many clients have e-newsletters going out to clients twice a month… or even every week. Why?
Because the more often you can engage customers with new information, new product announcements, new special offers, and so on — the more goodwill, and the more potential sales you’ll generate.
You can see where this can lead to for you if you become their “go-to” writer … someone they’ll want to lock in … often with a regular retainer deal … month after month.
Specializing in newsletters is the very best way to “dial in” regular income — especially when you put it in terms of the amount of time you want to spend writing.
It’s a wonderful way to make a great living while taking back control of your time…
And never, ever worrying about where your next project is coming from.
Like I said, it’s a “predictable income” writing gig!
And if you specialize in a niche — you can make more money in even less time.
How?
Remember the half dozen out of 70,000 independent chiropractors you could be writing for if you decide to make that your specialty?
Well, a chiropractor in Akron isn’t likely to have the same patient as a chiropractor in Fresno… or in Portland… or in your hometown.
So, one of those more “generic” articles you write for one of the newsletters…
You can write it once — and use the same copy for every client!
E-newsletters Can Be Just the START
But maybe you don’t want all that free time. Maybe you want to up your income even more.
No problem.
Just take on enough e-newsletter clients to fill your afternoons too.
Or here’s another option that could be even more lucrative…
You might want to take on other copywriting projects…
And e-newsletters can help make that happen.
It’s much easier to pitch yourself to a client for higher-paying projects when you’re already inside their business writing their e-newsletter… doing a great job… and proving yourself.
Your client will already know and trust you…
And you’ll have a unique perspective they’ll want to hear.
Maybe you’ll want to start writing for their social media channels, or their blog…
Or you might want to give writing sales letters a try. Even though e-newsletters are a great way to get a secure income, you might want to write a project that lets you earn royalties on top of your fees.
And writing e-newsletters is your best way in.
Your Secret Weapon to Earning Monthly Retainers of $1,000… $2,000… or More!
Now you’ve seen the kind of steady, predictable income you can make writing e-newsletters…
Why they’re the perfect project for earning steady, reliable, month-after-month retainers from multiple clients…
You’ve seen why businesses love e-newsletters when it comes to retaining customers and building loyalty, which leads to more sales…
You’ve seen how easy it can be to land clients — from local businesses in your hometown… to companies of all sizes operating in specific niches…
You’ve seen how e-newsletters are not only lucrative projects on their own — but can be a springboard to even more high-paying projects with your clients…
And just by following the five secrets I shared — you could probably go out right now and write a decent e-newsletter.
But we don’t just want you to be able to write a “decent” e-newsletter…
We want you to write GREAT ones…
Ones your clients will love because more engagement means happier customers, which means more sales!

Even how to increase the perceived value of working with you without doing any selling.
So now that you have a “big picture” view of what you’ll learn from Pam in How to Write Engaging E-newsletters…
Let me drill into each section and give you a few more details about what you’ll learn.
What You’ll Learn: A Complete How-To!
Lesson 1:
Why Newsletters? It’s a Big Opportunity for You
You’ll start with a big-picture look at newsletters, including some of the different formats you can write in and the audiences they go to… and how e-newsletters differ from regular emails that businesses send.
You’ll start building your newsletter “swipe file” so you have great examples of professional newsletters in the niches you want to write in. (Pam even gives you a list of her favorite newsletters you can sign up for!)
Lesson 2:
The Purpose and Power of Newsletters
You’ll dive deeper into why newsletters are so valuable for businesses… why it’s so important for them to build an email list… and how that differs from their social media and blog audiences.
Plus, you’ll get six questions you should ask every time you sit down to write a newsletter to make sure it’s all about the reader… a full video presentation on the state of e-newsletters from MarketingProfs’ Ann Handley, author of the wildly popular e-newsletter Total ANNARCHY… and some of the fundamentals that create a powerful newsletter.
Lesson 3:
What Newsletter Content Looks Like: A Closer Examination
Now you’ll go deep into the two most popular types of newsletters, original content and curated content, and how you’ll approach each one… You’ll also see the other newsletter formats you could write, including blended, digest, and episodic/POV.
And you’ll see why writing newsletters that businesses send to their employees rather than their customers is another big opportunity that’s surprisingly fulfilling for writers.
Lesson 4:
Newsletter Content Elements and Formulas
Now it’s time to dive into the nitty-gritty of each content element that’s important for newsletters!
You’ll get seven best practices for writing subject lines… tips for writing a relevant, riveting lead that keeps your reader glued to the screen… strategies for recommending powerful sidebars and graphics… the most common FAQs that apply almost universally to all businesses and that you can answer in a newsletter… and fun calls to action that will get readers engaged… along with examples that illustrate each of these critical elements (and more).
Lesson 5:
Let’s Dissect Some Newsletters
You’ll start with an extensive recap of all the different missions and audiences that clients have for their newsletters… the different content approaches each one can take… the many elements you can pick and choose from to include in a newsletter… and a broad formula that most newsletters stick to in some form or fashion.
This is as clear a snapshot as you’ll find of the array of opportunities for newsletter writers… and why your expertise is so valuable to clients. Pam will also walk you through two very different newsletters, showing how each one is the right match for their audience and mission.
Lesson 6:
Best Practices for Writing Newsletters
Okay — the time has come to start writing a newsletter! You’re going to walk through the process of creating a fresh, new, monthly e-newsletter for a client you’ve just landed… You’ll see the steps involved in understanding the client’s mission and audience… determining the content approach… mapping out what you’re going to include… and then researching and writing the content.
And your next exercise is to begin writing!
Lesson 7:
Your Newsletter Copywriting and Review Process
You’ll walk through the steps involved in completing your drafts, submitting them to clients, and accepting feedback like a pro. And great news… Even if you’re starting a newsletter from scratch for your client, you still don’t have to begin with a blank page.
You’ll learn how to find or create your own simple templates you can follow every time you write a new newsletter. You’ll even get examples of what a typical timeline looks like for the entire process of publishing a newsletter.
Lesson 8:
Four Ways to Expand Your Role and Fees
Once you’ve gotten this far, you’re ready to offer newsletter writing services! But the opportunity doesn’t stop there…
In this lesson, you’ll discover four easy ways to elevate your role as a newsletter consultant/adviser… to write engaging, inviting copy that gets even more eyeballs on the newsletter you write… to become more of a “go-to” writer for your clients… and start stacking up even bigger fees!
Lesson 9:
Get Clients for Newsletter Gigs
Time to land your clients! As you know by now, pretty much any business could benefit from a newsletter.
But here, you’ll get more specific instructions on WHO to approach within a company and HOW to approach them. Plus, you’ll get seven tips from a working newsletter writer on how to land your first client.
Lesson 10:
Attract Clients with Your Own Freelance Newsletter
Finally, remember — if any business, even a solo service provider, could benefit from sending an e-newsletter — then so can a solo copywriter like you.
Your e-newsletter could be the easiest marketing you ever do! In this lesson, you’ll see the different ways your e-newsletter will work for you… get ideas for what you could include that would be valuable to your clients and prospects… and understand the goals you could have for your e-newsletter, and how to strategically plan and execute it to achieve those goals.
And there it is!
